How to Cook Ginataang Tilapia (Tilapia with Coconut Milk)

This tilapia dish is a stewed tilapia with coconut milk.
  • 2 large tilapia, scales, gills and innards removed
  • ½ head garlic, chopped
  • 2 red onions, chopped
  • 1 Tbsp. patis or fish sauce
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. black peppercorns, whole
  • 1 Tbsp. corn oil
  • 2 pcs bay leaves
  • 1 tsp. vinegar
  • 1½ cup coconut milk
  • 1 Tbsp. ginger, slice into strips
  • 2 pcs siling labuyo

How to cook Ginataang Tilapia:
  1. In a medium size pan, heat corn oil and saute garlic and ginger until fragrant.
  2. Add the tilapia and let it sizzle for a few minutes. Turning the fish until the skin changes it's color.
  3. Add the chopped onions and vinegar, do not stir. Add black peppercorns, salt, fish sauce, bay leaves and siling labuyo.
  4. Then pour the coconut milk and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Serve hot.
  5. You can also garnish it by arranging Chinese cabbage leaves on a platter then put the tilapia on it and pour some sauce.
